THE MAASAI COLLECTION
Inspiration for this collection of statement jewels comes from the intricacy and vibrancy of traditional African tribal beaded adornments. Two new stories bring the inspiration to life, marrying the traditional and the cutting edge to dramatic effect. The Maasai story looks to the proud beading traditions of the Maasai people and other African tribes. Multiple wrappings of small beads meet Akong’s signature rows of coloured crystals and stones. The pieces are constructed from a rich blend of materials that both complement and contrast, including African trade beads, glass beads, semi-precious stones, wood and brass, finished with bright tassel embellishments. The Kenya story ups the urban a little with a strong mix of traditional and modern styling. It takes Akong’s distinctive chunky chains and crystals and gives them a striking African flavour with the addition of painted glass Krobo beads, sourced directly from artisans in Ghana.
